Relaxation
The experience of oxygen under pressure has a calming effect on most of our patients, providing the stillness needed for natural healing. Our chambers, with a spacious 42-inch diameter, offer plenty of room to sit upright or lie down comfortably. While many patients enjoy reading during their sessions, it’s common for them to drift into a restful sleep once they’re comfortable at pressure.
FDA Approved
At Northwest Stem Cell, treatment is delivered in FDA-approved hyperbaric chambers manufactured by RX-02 in Arizona. Each chamber undergoes rigorous testing by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the Committee on Pressurized Vessels for Human Occupancy—the same organization responsible for certifying submarines!
Safety First
Our physician-led team of Certified Hyperbaric Technologists prioritizes your safety above all else. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a safe and effective treatment when administered by qualified professionals. Unlike some centers that permit electronics in chambers, we strictly adhere to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) regulations. Your safety is paramount, and our team remains fully committed to following national safety standards without compromise.
Comfort
Our team is dedicated to guiding you through every step of the process—from entering the chamber to ensuring a safe dive and comfortable treatment—supporting you on your healing journey. We recommend wearing loose-fitting cotton clothing for your session. For added comfort, blankets and pillows are always provided.
What is the Process?
Undergoing your first HBOT session, often referred to as a "dive," can be an exciting and therapeutic experience. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you prepare and know what to expect:
1. Pre-Treatment Preparation
- Medical Evaluation: Before your first session, you'll undergo a consultation and evaluation to determine if HBOT is appropriate for your condition.
- Clothing: Wear comfortable, cotton clothing, as synthetic materials may not be allowed in the chamber. You'll likely be asked to remove jewelry, watches, or any flammable materials.
- Diet: Avoid heavy meals, alcohol, and caffeine before your session to minimize discomfort.
- Medications: Inform the staff of any medications you're taking to ensure they’re safe to use with HBOT.
2. Arrival and Orientation
- Introduction: The clinic staff will explain the process, safety procedures, and any specific instructions for your session.
- Vital Signs Check: Your blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen levels may be monitored before and after the treatment. We then check your eardrums to ensure you will have a safe and comfortable treatment.
- Chamber Overview: You’ll see the hyperbaric chamber. Our largest chambers are great for those concerned about small spaces, measuring 7 foot 2 inches tall and over 13 feet long! We also have chambers that are specifically used for our mobility-impaired patients.
3. Entering the Chamber
- Seating or Reclining: Depending on the chamber type, you may sit or lie down comfortably. You’ll be given a pillow, blanket, and possibly a communication device to speak with the technician.
- Pressure Adjustment: The chamber will gradually increase to the prescribed pressure, which may feel similar to the pressure changes during an airplane takeoff or scuba diving.
4. During the Dive
- Equalizing Pressure: You may feel pressure in your ears. Techniques like swallowing, yawning, or pinching your nose and blowing gently can help equalize it.
- Breathing Oxygen: You'll either breathe 100% oxygen directly through a mask or nasal cannula.
- Sensations: Some people feel a mild warmth or tingling as oxygen saturates the body. Most find the experience relaxing.
- Time in Chamber: Sessions typically last 60–90 minutes, during which you can relax, sleep, or read.
5. After the Dive
- Pressure Reduction: The chamber pressure will gradually return to normal. You may hear a hissing sound as the air releases, similar to decompression after a flight.
- Re-Evaluation: Your vital signs may be checked again, and you’ll have a chance to discuss how you feel with the staff.
- Post-Treatment Effects: You might feel slightly fatigued or energized, depending on your body’s response. Both are normal.
6. Tips for a Comfortable Experience
- Stay hydrated before and after your session.
- Communicate any discomfort to the technician immediately.
- Avoid alcohol, tobacco, or heavy exercise on the day of your session.
HBOT is a safe, non-invasive treatment designed to promote healing and recovery. Many patients report noticeable reductions in inflammation and pain after just a few consecutive treatments. Your first dive is an opportunity to familiarize yourself with the process and begin experiencing its benefits.
